BSANZ Award for Bibliographic Studies

This award for excellence in the field of bibliographic studies will be given on an occasional basis to individuals in recognition of their outstanding contribution. All Society members can submit nominations, including a brief outline of the nominee’s achievements, at any point during the year to the President, Simon Farley (s.farley@library.uq.edu.au). The Executive Committee will consider and decide on the nominations.

Wallace Kirsop Conference Bursary

Wallace Kirsop, one of Australia’s most eminent bibliographers and historians, was a founding member of BSANZ in 1969 and has been a distinguished member ever since, including in roles on its Executive Committee. This award is named in his honour.

In discussion with the host institution, each year the BSANZ Executive Committee will award bursaries to selected applicants who are presenting a paper at the annual BSANZ conference.

Application criteria

  • Preference will be given to student and early career researchers based in Australia and New Zealand.
  • Amounts up to $2000 AUD may be requested; the awarded amount is at the discretion of the BSANZ Executive Committee.
  • Bursaries may cover travel costs and/or the waiving of the registration fee.
  • Applicants will be notified promptly once the program of papers is confirmed.

Process

To apply, please include a request for a bursary with your paper proposal during the Call for Papers period, including a budget outlining your expenses.

Donald Kerr Bursary for Bibliographic Research

Dr Donald Kerr is one of New Zealand’s most outstanding experts in bibliography and provenance research, and has been a valued member of BSANZ, including in roles on its Executive Committee, for many years. This award is named in his honour.

This bursary is designed to support bibliographic research by BSANZ members.

Application criteria

  • The applicant must be a current financial member of BSANZ.
  • The funding may support research activities or a specific training opportunity, such as workshops, seminars, conferences, and summer schools. These opportunities may take place in Australia, New Zealand or other international locations.
  • The research project or training opportunity must relate to the fields of bibliography, and/or book history, and/or the history of reading.
  • Acquittal of the bursary includes a tangible outcome for BSANZ: a proposal for a paper delivered at the annual conference, and/or an article in Script & Print, and/or a piece for the newsletter, Broadsheet. Papers and written pieces will be considered by the relevant editors and acceptance is at their discretion.
  • The application must include:
    • A description of the project/training opportunity and the relevance to the applicant’s work and/or research,
    • Specification of an amount requested up to $500 AUD and a budget explaining its use,
    • A CV,
    • A description of acquittal via a proposed publication or paper, as described above.

Process

Submissions will be accepted by the Secretary between 1 December and 31 March, for use within 12 months. Each application will be discussed by the Executive Committee and a decision given to the applicant after the Committee’s next meeting.

Bursaries are at the discretion of the Executive Committee and its decision is final and non-negotiable.

In the case of a specific training opportunity, payment of bursary is contingent on proof of acceptance.

BSANZ Bursary for the Australian and New Zealand Rare Books School (ANZRBS) 

The Australian and New Zealand Rare Book School alternates between four venues annually: State Library Victoria (Melbourne), State Library NSW (Sydney), Victoria University (Wellington) and the University of Otago (Dunedin). It offers courses that support education and training in the study of rare books, including bibliography and material culture. BSANZ offers a bursary for its members each year.

Application criteria

  • The bursary will cover the course cost.
  • The bursary will be awarded to a student or early career member based in Australia and New Zealand who is ineligible for funding or financial aid through their employer or educational institution.

Process

To apply, please include a statement of 200 words outlining your suitability for the bursary with your application to attend the Rare Book Summer School. The BSANZ Executive Committee will alert the applicants of the outcome within one week of applications closing.
